Al Ahram Establishment

Al Ahram Establishment

Al Ahram Establishment has the monopoly over the printing and distribution of most private Egyptian print outlets. It therefore owns the largest printing house in Egypt and the most widespread distribution network. Al Ahram establishment also has a number of affiliated companies and bodies working in the field of journalism and publishing (see below), making it one of the most important media and cultural entities in the Middle East. Besides Al Ahram daily newspaper, Al Ahram Establishment owns 30 other publications (newspapers, magazines, and periodicals). It is known to be a tool of the government and has already censored and confiscated publications, prevented them from being published, stopped printing and distribution.

As all other public media entities, Al Ahram Establishment is managed by the National Press Authority, an independent body mandated by the 2014 Egyptian Constitution. It is also subjected to the supervision of several state supervisory agencies such as the Central Auditing Organization and the Administrative Control Authority.

Like other State-owned press institutions, and as required by legislation, Al Ahram Establishment relies heavily on the state budget. All the assets owned by the institution are estimated to be about 100 billion EGP (over 5 billion USD), but it generates annual revenues not exceeding two billion EGP (over 100,000,000 USD), Al-Ahram has accumulated a debt of 1.6 billion EGP (about 89,500,000 USD) of debt.
